Skiing is a fantastic experience, representing a chilled yet energetic break. But it pays to be well covered; after all, life on the slopes is often not for the faint-hearted. And there’s no excuse not to protect against the kind of eventualities that only cross your mind when you’re hurtling out of control down a mountain, especially when travel insurance is available from just £7.84 for a single trip.

But back to the pleasant stuff… there are six main countries in Europe for skiing: Andorra, Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany and Italy.

For the beginners and moderately experienced skiers, Seefeld in Austria is a great resort. Although better known for cross-country skiing, Seefeld’s Alpine ski area is 2,100m high and home to 45km of downhill runs, which are mostly blue (beginners) and red (intermediate).

As it is mainly the destination for couples, families and pensioners, it would be an excellent resort to take your kids to. And there’s an extensive selection of around 60 four- and five-star hotels to choose from as well.

Espace Killy in France may not be the biggest ski destination, but it does have runs that cater for both beginners and experts. It takes in the resorts of Tignes and Val d’Isere and is regarded by many as being the best skiing and boarding destination in Europe. It is also one of the cheapest, with a typical price of £126 for a six-day pass.

For those wanting a real challenge, St. Anton in Austria is a place where only the fearless survive! Some of the most extreme slopes can be found here, where high-octane skiing gives way to high-energy nightlife!
